When I got home that night, Marion hadnât returned. Iâd already decided to make us some spaghetti for dinner, so after grabbing a shower and a quick snack I started chopping the vegetables so Iâd have everything prepped to throw in the frying pan when she walked in the door.
When she still wasnât home, I started to get nervous. It wasnât like her not to call if she was going to be late. I checked my cell and was surprised to see that I had five messages from Marion.
Oh, no, I forgot I turned off the ringer when I went riding. I quickly listened to the messages and was relieved to hear that she hadnât been in an accident or hospitalized or anything.
âAstrid,â the first message said, âour board meeting is running late and they want to meet tomorrow as well. Would you be okay if I stayed down here one night and came back the next day? Maybe Hilaryâs parents could pick you up again.â
The next few messages sounded more urgent, as if she was imagining my lying in a ditch somewhere unable to get to my phone. I quickly dialed her number
âThank goodness you called, Astrid. I was just about to head home to make sure you were okay. Where on earth were you?â
âSorry,â I said, wincing at the worry in her voice. âI had my ringer off. Sure Iâll be fine by myself for the night. I can catch up on my reading.â
âOkay, sweetie, Iâll be back by dinnertime tomorrow. Could you call Hilary and see if the Ahlbergs could give you a ride to work tomorrow?â
âOh I donât have toâ¦.â I stopped before I could tell her that my work day had already been cancelled. An idea bloomed to life in my head. A whole day on my own stretched out in front of me. The possibilities were endless. âI mean, of course theyâll drive me. Iâll ask them as soon as I hang up.â
âThank you for understanding, darling. Iâll make sure I bring you back a nice present from town.â
âOh, you donât need to do that, Marion,â I said quickly. âSee you tomorrow.â I hung up, feeling guilty. There she was thinking about buying me presents when I was about to go behind her back and do something awfulâ¦or at least something she probably wouldnât approve of.
My next call wasnât to Hilary; it was to Miranda.
âAstrid?â Mirandaâs voice sounded distant on the phone, like a strangerâs voice, âWow, itâs been a while. How are you?â
âGreat,â I said, getting to the point, âMiranda, I need to meet you at the range with your key. If I donât practice soon, Iâm seriously going to go nuts.â
Miranda was silent for a moment. âIs your shoulder better already?â she asked slowly. âThat healed really quickly. Did you get your bow back?â
âIâm using my old one,â I said impatiently. âItâs not pretty, but it works. Iâm going to have the whole day free tomorrow, but I donât have my key. Could you meet me there? It would be just like old times.
